Spring Pike Fishing on the Fly

Pike Fishing Outing – Saturday, May 31st, 2025

Join CWFF for a fun and relaxed day of pike fishing on Saturday, May 31st, 2025, starting at 10:00 AM! This event is perfect for beginners and experienced anglers alike, with a short, easy walk to the fishing spot from shore. The exact location will be shared with registrants but is within an hour’s drive of Calgary.

Expect lots of action on the water—we’re hoping for a repeat of last year’s success, with a high chance of hooking into a pike or two, even if it’s your first time casting! These pike are generally smaller, easy to handle, and a ton of fun to catch. Your $5 registration fee includes a bite-proof leader and a colorful pike fly to get you started. (Optional: You’re welcome to pick up a few extra large streamer-style flies—leeches work well.)

Gear Requirements:

For this event, the following items are mandatory:

  • Fly rod and reel with floating line (5–6 weight or heavier is ideal)

  • Waders and wading boots – Necessary for safe access and comfort

  • Landing net – Required for safe fish handling

  • Heavy leader or bite wire tippet (20–30 lb test)

  • Pliers or long-handled hook remover – For safely unhooking pike

  • Polarized sunglasses – For visibility and eye protection

We'll start with a quick meeting in the parking lot to get everyone set up and comfortable with gear, and then head to the water. There’s even a chance you might land a walleye!

What to Bring:

  • Extra set of clothes (just in case)

  • Sunscreen & bug spray

  • Water and snacks

  • Hat & weather-appropriate layers

  • Wading staff or walking sticks (optional, for easier walking)

  • Nippers, hemostat, or any other handy tools

New to Pike Fishing?

We highly recommend attending the "Ladies Pike Night" at Out Fly Fishing on May 22, a special info session designed to help beginners get set up and confident before the outing. You’ll learn about gear, casting tips, pike behavior, and more.
